योधानां सिंहनादैः शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिस्वनैः रथनेमिस्वनैः सनागवरबृंहितैःyodhānāṃ siṃhanādaiḥ śaṅkhadundubhinisvanaiḥ rathanemisvanaiḥ sanāgavarabṛṃhitaiḥ[amid] the lion-roars of the warriors, the sounds of conches and kettledrums, the rumble of chariot wheel-rims, [mingled] with the trumpeting of splendid elephants
हेषितस्वनमिश्रैः क्ष्वेडितास्फोटितस्वनैः तस्मिन् पार्थिवे गच्छति किलकिलाशब्दः आसीत्heṣitasvanamiśraiḥ kṣveḍitāsphoṭitasvanaiḥ tasmin pārthive gacchati kilakilāśabdaḥ āsīt[amid] the neighing [of horses], shouts and the slapping [of arms] -- as that king proceeded, a jubilant din arose
प्रासादवरशृङ्गस्थाः स्त्रियः तं शूरं आत्मयशस्करं परया नृपशोभया ददृशुःprāsādavaraśṛṅgasthāḥ striyaḥ taṃ śūraṃ ātmayaśaskaraṃ parayā nṛpaśobhayā dadṛśuḥthe wives standing atop the finest palaces gazed upon that hero, who himself was fashioning his own fame, [shining] with supreme royal splendor
स्त्रीगणाः तं शक्रोपमं अमित्रघ्नं परवारणवारणं शस्त्रपाणिं मेनिरेstrīgaṇāḥ taṃ śakropamaṃ amitraghnaṃ paravāraṇavāraṇaṃ śastrapāṇiṃ menirethe throngs of wives esteemed him, equal to Indra, slayer of foes, repeller of enemy elephants, [standing] weapon in hand
अयं सः पुरुषव्याघ्रः रणे अद्भुतपराक्रमः यस्य बाहुबलं प्राप्य असुहृद्गणाः न भवन्तिayaṃ saḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ raṇe adbhutaparākramaḥ yasya bāhubalaṃ prāpya asuhṛdgaṇāḥ na bhavanti[they said:] here is that tiger among men, wondrous in valor in battle, meeting the strength of whose arms the hosts of enemies cease to exist
इति वाचः ब्रुवन्त्यः ताः स्त्रियः प्रेम्णा नराधिपं तुष्टुवुः तस्य मूर्धनि पुष्पवृष्टीः ससृजुःiti vācaḥ bruvantyaḥ tāḥ striyaḥ premṇā narādhipaṃ tuṣṭuvuḥ tasya mūrdhani puṣpavṛṣṭīḥ sasṛjuḥspeaking such words, those wives lovingly praised the king and showered his head with a rain of flowers

This passage describes the splendid departure of King Duhshanta for the hunt. Notable is the reverence the people and his wives show him: he is the focus of his subjects' love and admiration. Yet a shadow is also visible: the king, praised as protector, sets out "wishing to strike down game" -- the very strength that shields his subjects is turned toward slaying creatures for sport. The hunt (mrigaya) is, in tradition, a royal exercise in the art of arms, but also -- as what follows will show -- a deed bound up with violence; it is no accident that it is precisely on this hunt that the king will wander into Kanva's hermitage and meet Shakuntala, as though drawn away from the chase toward something higher. Note too the good in him: the king sends the townsfolk back rather than leading them far from home -- care for his subjects even amid his sport. Thus the text paints the king in the full splendor of worldly glory -- only to lead him, afterward, to a meeting that will give the line of the Bharatas its continuation.
