देवयानी शर्मिष्ठां अभिगम्य इदं अब्रवीत् सुभ्रु कामलुब्धया ते इदं किं वृजिनं कृतंdevayānī śarmiṣṭhāṃ abhigamya idaṃ abravīt subhru kāmalubdhayā te idaṃ kiṃ vṛjinaṃ kṛtaṃDevayani, approaching Sharmishtha, said this: "O fair-browed one, overcome by desire, what wrongdoing have you committed?"
शर्मिष्ठा उवाच कः चित् धर्मात्मा वेदपारगः ऋषिः अभ्यागतः सः मया वरदः धर्मसंहितं कामं याचितःśarmiṣṭhā uvāca kaḥ cit dharmātmā vedapāragaḥ ṛṣiḥ abhyāgataḥ saḥ mayā varadaḥ dharmasaṃhitaṃ kāmaṃ yācitaḥSharmishtha said: "A certain righteous sage, versed in the Vedas, came [to me]; he, a granter of boons, was asked by me for a wish in accordance with dharma [— for offspring]
शुचिस्मिते अहं अन्यायतः कामं न आचरामि तस्मात् ऋषेः मम अपत्यं इति ते सत्यं ब्रवीमिśucismite ahaṃ anyāyataḥ kāmaṃ na ācarāmi tasmāt ṛṣeḥ mama apatyaṃ iti te satyaṃ bravīmi"O brightly-smiling one, I do not act on desire unlawfully; therefore my child is from that sage; I speak the truth to you"

देवयानी उवाच शर्मिष्ठे यदि एतत् एवं ज्येष्ठात् श्रेष्ठात् द्विजात् ते अपत्यं लब्धं मम मन्युः न विद्यतेdevayānī uvāca śarmiṣṭhe yadi etat evaṃ jyeṣṭhāt śreṣṭhāt dvijāt te apatyaṃ labdhaṃ mama manyuḥ na vidyateDevayani said: "O Sharmishtha, if this is so, and the child was obtained from the eldest, best of the twice-born, then I bear no anger"

Here Sharmishtha conceals the truth through a cunning half-deception — and the ambiguity of her position shows itself. It is telling that Sharmishtha does not directly lie (she avoids naming the king), but directs suspicion toward “a certain sage”; and her words — “he blazed like the sun, and I could not question him” — are evasive. Here we see that concealing the truth by half-speech is itself a kind of untruth; and though Sharmishtha acted within dharma (asking for offspring from her mistress's husband, with his consent), her secrecy is the seed of the discord to come. Equally telling is that Devayani is satisfied with a half-truth (“if from the best of brahmins, then no anger”) — her pride is soothed by the thought of the child's “high-born father.” Thus both women remain in ignorance and half-knowledge; and — as what follows will show — the truth will come out through the children. Note too the birth of Yayati's five sons: Yadu and Turvasu (from Devayani), Druhyu, Anu, and Puru (from Sharmishtha) — the forefathers of five great lineages (including the Yadavas and the Pauravas). Thus from this tangled union comes the beginning of many peoples; providence weaves genealogy even through human weakness.
