Here the offended Devayani brings her complaint, and Shukra curses the king with old age. Devayani's indignation is telling: “dharma has been conquered by adharma, the world has been turned upside down”; what wounds her is not only the betrayal but that the servant has three sons while she has two: wounded rivalry (including rivalry in offspring) is the root of her anger. Here we see that behind “zeal for dharma” often lies personal grievance; Devayani clothes her jealousy in the language of dharma, yet pride moves her as well. Telling too is Shukra's curse: “though a knower of dharma, you have committed an adharma pleasing to yourself; therefore old age will overtake you.” Here is a stern principle: knowledge of dharma does not excuse its violation — on the contrary, more is demanded of one who knows; “pleasing adharma” (a sin committed for enjoyment, against a known duty) is the graver offense. And the punishment — old age, which destroys the very pleasure for whose sake the king sinned — is measured to the sin. So scripture teaches: one who violates duty for the sake of pleasure loses the very capacity to enjoy; and — as what follows will show — this curse will lead to Yayati's great lesson about the insatiability of desire.
