译文
Vaishampayana said: "When Chitrangada was slain, and with his brother still a boy, O sinless one, Bhishma guarded that kingdom, abiding by the will of Satyavati. Seeing that his brother, the best of the wise, had reached youth, Bhishma turned his mind to the marriage of Vichitravirya."

Here Bhishma, seeing his brother come of age, takes care for his marriage. It is telling that the one who renounced marriage for himself now attends to his brother's marriage: what he denied himself for the sake of the lineage, he arranges for another. Here is the purity of selfless service: Bhishma feels no envy and no regret, but works for the continuation of the line through his brother as he would work for his own good. Telling too is his constancy in the will of Satyavati: again and again it is stressed that he acts "abiding by the will of his stepmother" -- faithful to his vow to serve the family, he does not act on his own will but aligns his affairs with the elder of the household. Here is the humility of the great: one whose might surpasses that of kings humbly follows the will of the mother of the line in family matters. Thus the scripture shows that true greatness lies not in self-assertion but in service and accord; and this same care of Bhishma for the lineage will soon lead him to a new feat -- winning brides for his brother.
