Here Vidura answers Bhishma with perfect humility. The threefold honor is striking: "you are father, you are mother, you are the supreme guru" — Vidura sees in Bhishma all at once, one deserving unconditional reverence. Here is displayed a model of the right attitude toward an elder and teacher: not to argue or press one's own view, but, having acknowledged his guidance, to entrust the decision to him. It is telling that the wisest of the brothers, whose counsel was asked, does not display his own intelligence but humbly returns the decision to the elder — for true wisdom knows its place and honors the hierarchy of dharma. Thus Vidura shows that humility and reverence toward elders are not a weakness of the mind but its ornament.
