Here the entire host of Dhritarashtra's hundred sons is proclaimed. It is telling that at the head of the list, and through so many of the names, sounds the ominous prefix 'Dur-/Duh-' ('bad, difficult, evil'): Duryodhana ('hard to overcome' — or 'evil warrior'), Duhshasana ('one who rules badly, unrestrained'), Durmukha, Durmada, Durmarshana, Dushpradharshana... as though the very stamp of the clan's ill fortune shows through in the names. Here the name proclaims the nature: this hundred, for all their strength, are marked by a spirit of pride and lawlessness. Telling, too, is the abundance of names denoting might and ferocity (Bhimabala, Ugrayudha, Ugrashravas, Mahabahu): a great multitude of the mighty — but without dharma; and this entire host, so impressively enumerated, will fall to the last man at Kurukshetra. Thus scripture, unrolling this long scroll of names, silently preaches the vanity of strength and numbers unconsecrated by righteousness: a hundred formidable sons will not save the clan, while the five righteous Pandavas, led by the Lord, will triumph. In the very length of this roll of the doomed lies a lesson on the futility of might without dharma.
