नामधेयानुपूर्व्येण विद्धि जन्मक्रमं नृप ॥
सर्वे त्व् अतिरथाः शूराः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः ॥
सर्वे वेदविदश् चैव राजशास्त्रेषु कोविदाः ॥
सर्वे संसर्गविद्यासु विद्याभिजनशोभिनः ॥
सर्वेषाम् अनुरूपाश् च कृता दारा महीपते ॥
धृतराष्ट्रेण समये समीक्ष्य विधिवत् तदा ॥
nāmadheyānupūrvyeṇa viddhi janmakramaṃ nṛpa ||
sarve tv atirathāḥ śūrāḥ sarve yuddhaviśāradāḥ ||
sarve vedavidaś caiva rājaśāstreṣu kovidāḥ ||
sarve saṃsargavidyāsu vidyābhijanaśobhinaḥ ||
sarveṣām anurūpāś ca kṛtā dārā mahīpate ||
dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa samaye samīkṣya vidhivat tadā ||
‘By the order of names, know also the order of birth, o king. All of them were superb warriors, heroes, all skilled in battle, all knowers of the Vedas and versed in the sciences of kingship, all accomplished in the arts of social conduct, resplendent with learning and noble birth. And for all of them Dhritarashtra, in due time, having considered everything according to rite, arranged fitting marriages, o lord of the earth.’

Here it is said of the hundred sons that all of them were both valiant and learned — knowers of the Vedas, of the sciences of kingship, and of social conduct. This combination is telling: they lacked neither strength, nor education, nor noble birth. Here is a bitter lesson: learning and valor by themselves do not save, when humility and righteousness are absent. The Kauravas knew the Vedas — but did not follow them; they possessed the sciences — but not the dharma of the heart. Knowledge without devotion and virtue is like an ornament on a corpse: this hundred possessed everything except the one thing that matters — purity and obedience to dharma. Thus scripture warns that outward accomplishments — learning, skill, noble lineage — without inner righteousness lead only to greater ruin, for they arm evil.
