वाचम् उच्चारिताम् उच्चैस् तां निशम्य तपस्विनाम् ॥
बभूव परमो हर्षः शतशृङ्गनिवासिनाम् ॥

आकाशे दुन्दुभीनां च बभूव तुमुलः स्वनः ॥
उदतिष्ठन् महाघोषः पुष्पवृष्टिभिर् आवृतः ॥
समवेत्य च देवानां गणाः पार्थम् अपूजयन् ॥
vācam uccāritām uccais tāṃ niśamya tapasvinām ||
babhūva paramo harṣaḥ śataśṛṅganivāsinām ||
tathā devaṛṣīṇāṃ ca sendrāṇāṃ ca divaukasām ||

“Having heard that loudly spoken word, the ascetics — the dwellers of Shatashringa — were filled with supreme joy; likewise among the divine sages and the celestials headed by Indra a deafening sound of kettledrums rang out in the sky; a great roar arose, accompanied by showers of flowers; and the hosts of gods, gathering together, honored Partha.”

Here begins something unprecedented — the whole universe rejoices at the birth of Arjuna. It is significant that nothing like this attended the birth of the first two Pandavas: there was only the tiding of a voice. But the birth of Arjuna is met with the kettledrums of heaven, a shower of flowers, and the homage of the gods. This confirms his special nature: creation exults, for Nara has descended — the eternal companion of Narayana, through whom the Lord Himself will reveal Himself to the world. It is significant that the gods do not merely rejoice but “honor” (apujayan) the infant: heaven itself bows before one who is bound to the Lord. Thus scripture, through the grandeur of this celebration, sets Arjuna apart among his brothers, preparing the reader for his exceptional role as Krishna's interlocutor in the Bhagavad-gita.
