Here scripture unfolds a solemn roll call of the celestials who gathered for Arjuna's birth — the prajapatis, the seven sages, the gandharvas. The very completeness of the gathering is significant: every order of higher being comes to pay homage to the newborn. This is undeniable testimony to Arjuna's greatness: all creation does not assemble for the birth of an ordinary hero. Such honor is given only to the descent of one eternally bound to the Lord — Nara, the friend of Narayana. It is significant that the gandharvas “sing the praises” (upagayanti) of him and the apsaras dance: his very birth becomes a universal celebration. In naming them one by one, scripture calls the whole host of celestials to witness — so as to preserve forever the memory of how dear this hero of dharma is to the heavens.
