वैशंपायन उवाच
दर्शनीयांस् ततः पुत्रान् पाण्डुः पञ्च महावने ॥
तान् पश्यन् पर्वते रेमे स्वबाहुबलपालितान् ॥
सुपुष्पितवने काले कदा चिन् मधुमाधवे ॥
भूतसंमोहने राजा सभार्यो व्यचरद् वनम् ॥
पलाशैस् तिलकैश् चूतैश् चम्पकैः पारिभद्रकैः ॥
अन्यैश् च बहुभिर् वृक्षैः फलपुष्पसमृद्धिभिः ॥
जलस्थानैश् च विविधैः पद्मिनीभिश् च शोभितम् ॥
पाण्डोर् वनं तु संप्रेक्ष्य प्रजज्ञे हृदि मन्मथः ॥

tān paśyan parvate reme svabāhubalapālitān ||
supuṣpitavane kāle kadā cin madhumādhave ||
bhūtasaṃmohane rājā sabhāryo vyacarad vanam ||
palāśais tilakaiś cūtaiś campakaiḥ pāribhadrakaiḥ ||
anyaiś ca bahubhir vṛkṣaiḥ phalapuṣpasamṛddhibhiḥ ||
jalasthānaiś ca vividhaiḥ padminībhiś ca śobhitam ||
pāṇḍor vanaṃ tu saṃprekṣya prajajñe hṛdi manmathaḥ ||
Vaishampayana said: "Then Pandu, gazing upon his five comely sons in the great forest on the mountain, guarded by the strength of his own arms, rejoiced. Once, in the season of the blossoming forest, in spring, in that time enchanting to all beings, the king wandered through the forest with his wife. And having surveyed that forest -- adorned with palashas, tilakas, mangoes, champakas, paribhadrakas and many other trees abounding in fruit and flowers, and graced with various pools of water and lotus ponds -- Pandu felt passion born in his heart."

Here begins the fateful turn -- the awakening of passion that will destroy Pandu. The setting is telling: spring, the blossoming forest, a time "enchanting to all beings" -- nature itself, steeped in languor, tempts the senses. It shows how strong the power of outward impressions is over an unsteadied mind: even long years of austerity had not extinguished in Pandu the seed of kama, and the abundance of spring awakened it. It is significant that only moments before he had been blissfully rejoicing in his sons, the fruit of dharma -- and at once passion draws near, threatening to destroy everything. So the scripture reveals the treachery of kama: it lies in wait even for the ascetic in a moment of carelessness, and therefore the guarding of the senses must be unceasing to the very end.
