ततः माद्री समालिङ्ग्य राजानं गतचेतसम्tataḥ mādrī samāliṅgya rājānaṃ gatacetasamthen Madri, embracing the lifeless king,
मुमोच दुःखजं शब्दं पुनः पुनः अतीव हmumoca duḥkhajaṃ śabdaṃ punaḥ punaḥ atīva halet out a cry of grief again and again, beyond measure
सह पुत्रैः ततः कुन्ती माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौsaha putraiḥ tataḥ kuntī mādrīputrau ca pāṇḍavauthen Kunti with her sons, and Madri's two sons, the Pandavas,
आजग्मुः सहिताः तत्र यत्र राजा तथा गतःājagmuḥ sahitāḥ tatra yatra rājā tathā gataḥcame together there, where the king lay thus [fallen]
ततः माद्री अब्रवीत् राजन् आर्ता कुन्तीम् इदं वचःtataḥ mādrī abravīt rājan ārtā kuntīm idaṃ vacaḥthen Madri, grieving, said to Kunti, O king, this word:

Here grief falls upon the family. Madri's care even in despair is telling: she bids Kunti come alone, without the children, so that the little ones will not see the terrible sight. Even in boundless sorrow a noble heart looks after others, sheltering the innocent from the shock. Kunti's grief is also telling, sensing the disaster before she sees it: "I am destroyed!" -- the cry of a wife who grasps in a single instant that she has become a widow. So the scripture shows the suddenness and crushing weight of loss; and in the very concern of both wives for the children there already appears the shape of the dispute soon to arise between them -- which of them is to live for the orphans, and which is to follow the husband.
