समीक्षमाणः स तु तां वयःस्थां तनुवाससम् ॥

रहस्य् आत्मसमां दृष्ट्वा राजा राजीवलोचनाम् ॥
न शशाक नियन्तुं तं कामं कामबलात्कृतः ॥
तत एनां बलाद् राजा निजग्राह रहोगताम् ॥

स तु कामपरीतात्मा तं शापं नान्वबुध्यत ॥

"Madri alone followed Pandu, who walked there with a joyful heart, like an immortal, wearing a light and beautiful garment. Gazing at her, in the bloom of youth, in her thin garment, the king felt his passion grow, like a fire flaring up in a thicket. Having seen alone the lotus-eyed one, equal to him in spirit, the king, compelled by the force of passion, could not restrain it. Then he seized her by force, having found her alone, held back by that gracious lady who resisted with all her strength; but he, his soul possessed by passion, did not remember that curse, approaching Madri by the law of union, as though by force."

Here passion overpowers Pandu entirely, overcoming both his will and his memory of the fatal curse. The comparison of passion to "a fire flaring up in a thicket" is telling: a small spark of kama, falling on the dry brushwood of impressions, blazes into an unstoppable conflagration. It is also telling that Madri resists "with all her strength", yet he does not heed her: a man darkened by passion is deaf even to the most saving warning. Here is the grave truth of the Bhagavad-gita (3.37): kama, desire, is the all-devouring enemy that darkens the intellect; even the righteous remain subject to it until they are fully purified. It is telling that Pandu "did not remember the curse": passion, at the height of its force, erases even the fear of death from the mind. So the scripture shows that unbridled desire is blind and self-destructive, and gives warning: whoever has not mastered the senses beforehand will be overtaken and destroyed by passion in a moment of weakness.
