वैशंपायन उवाच
विदुरस् तं तथेत्य् उक्त्वा भीष्मेण सह भारत ॥
पाण्डुं संस्कारयाम् आस देशे परमसंवृते ॥
ततस् तु नगरात् तूर्णम् आज्यहोमपुरस्कृताः ॥
निर्हृताः पावका दीप्ताः पाण्डो राजपुरोहितैः ॥
अथैनम् आर्तवैर् गन्धैर् माल्यैश् च विविधैर् वरैः ॥
शिबिकां समलंचक्रुर् वाससाच्छाद्य सर्वशः ॥
तां तथा शोभितां माल्यैर् वासोभिश् च महाधनैः ॥
अमात्या ज्ञातयश् चैव सुहृदश् चोपतस्थिरे ॥
नृसिंहं नरयुक्तेन परमालंकृतेन तम् ॥
अवहन् यानमुख्येन सह माद्र्या सुसंवृतम् ॥

viduras taṃ tathety uktvā bhīṣmeṇa saha bhārata ||
pāṇḍuṃ saṃskārayām āsa deśe paramasaṃvṛte ||
tatas tu nagarāt tūrṇam ājyahomapuraskṛtāḥ ||
nirhṛtāḥ pāvakā dīptāḥ pāṇḍo rājapurohitaiḥ ||
athainam ārtavair gandhair mālyaiś ca vividhair varaiḥ ||
śibikāṃ samalaṃcakrur vāsasācchādya sarvaśaḥ ||
tāṃ tathā śobhitāṃ mālyair vāsobhiś ca mahādhanaiḥ ||
amātyā jñātayaś caiva suhṛdaś copatasthire ||
nṛsiṃhaṃ narayuktena paramālaṃkṛtena tam ||
avahan yānamukhyena saha mādryā susaṃvṛtam ||
Vaishampayana said: "Vidura, having said 'so be it,' together with Bhishma performed the funeral rites over Pandu in a most secluded place. Then from the city swiftly, preceded by offerings of ghee, the blazing sacred fires of Pandu were carried out by the royal priests. His body, adorned with seasonal fragrances and various excellent garlands, was arrayed upon the palanquin, covered with cloth on every side; and that palanquin, adorned with garlands and precious cloths, was attended by counselors, kinsmen, and friends. That lion among men, together with Madri, well covered, was borne on the chief palanquin, drawn by men, richly adorned."

Here a solemn funeral procession is arrayed. Telling is the presence of the sacred fire and the royal priests: the funeral of a righteous king is a rite, not a mere burial, performed with full devotion so that the soul may attain a good destination. Telling too is that the body is carried by "counselors, kinsmen, and friends" themselves: the highest in the realm count it an honor to bear the departed sovereign. Here is due reverence for the body of the righteous — not out of attachment to flesh, but as to the dwelling in which a good soul once lived. Thus scripture shows that the sending-off of the dead in the Kuru line is done according to dharma, with rite and love.
