"With a white parasol, a yak-tail fan, and the sounds of all musical instruments, the procession was adorned. And men, having taken many jewels, distributed them by the hundreds to those who desired them — these were the posthumous gifts of Pandu. Then, for the sake of the Kaurava, they brought white, radiant, great parasols and beautiful garments; and the sacrificial fires, borne by priests in white garments, into which oblations were poured, went before him, blazing, well arrayed."

Here royal honors and the generous giving of gifts at the funeral appear. Telling are the "posthumous gifts" (aurdhvadehika): riches are distributed in the name of the departed, for charity given for the sake of the dead turns to his benefit in the other world. Here is a Vedic truth: beyond the threshold of death the soul carries away not what was hoarded but what was given away; and so at the funeral of the righteous a generous dana is performed for his good. Telling too are the white parasols and the priests' garments: white is at once the color of purity and of mourning. Thus scripture shows that seeing off a king is not only an honor to the body but active good for his soul through sacrifice and giving.
