"Brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas, and shudras by the thousands, weeping, scorched by grief, followed after the sovereign: 'He, having left us and cast us into everlasting sorrow, having made us defenseless, the supreme protector — where does the sovereign go?' Wailing, all the Pandavas, Bhishma, and Vidura set down that palanquin — the lion among men, Pandu, with his wife — in a lovely woodland spot, on the level, auspicious bank of the Ganges."

Here the love of the whole people for Pandu shows itself. Telling is that all the classes weep alike, calling him "the supreme protector" (paro nathah): the measure of a good king is that the people mourn him as their own guardian, not as a distant lord. In this is the fruit of righteous rule: he who shepherded his subjects as a father is mourned as a father. Telling too is the place of rest — the bank of the Ganga, the holiest of rivers: even the last rite is performed by the sacred waters, so that the soul may attain purification. Thus scripture, by the measure of the people's grief, testifies to Pandu's righteousness: truly great is that king whose death is a sorrow for all, from brahmin to shudra.
