Here a new tale opens with the listener's question. It is significant that the narrative moves through Janamejaya's living involvement: tradition is not passed down as a dead scroll but as a conversation between one who wishes to know and one who knows. Here is the image of proper listening (shravana): good descends upon one who asks with faith and attention. So scripture shows that the disciple's question opens the teacher's lips; and from this question will be born the tale of a brahmana family's rescue.
