Kunti said: "We live in comfort, son, in the brahmana's dwelling, unknown to the Dhartarashtras, honored, and free of anxiety. I am always thinking, son, what I might do to please this brahmana — as is fitting for those who have lived happily in another's house. Such is a worthy person, child: one in whom good done does not perish, and however much another does for him, he repays it with still more. Now surely misfortune has befallen this brahmana; if we rendered him help in it, that would be a good deed."

Here Kunti proclaims the dharma of gratitude. Her rule is significant: good must not "perish" in the one who received it — the grateful repay what they have received, and with abundance. Here it is shown that gratitude is a duty of dharma: one who has tasted another's hospitality is obliged to repay it with good, especially in the hour of the benefactor's misfortune. It is significant, too, that Kunti seeks the occasion to serve rather than waiting to be asked: a grateful heart itself watches for a way to help. So scripture shows that true gratitude is active — it turns the mercy received into a returning mercy, greater than before.
