ऊषुर् नातिचिरं कालं ब्राह्मणस्य निवेशने ॥
रमणीयानि पश्यन्तो वनानि विविधानि च ॥
पार्थिवान् अपि चोद्देशान् सरितश् च सरांसि च ॥
चेरुर् भैक्षं तदा ते तु सर्व एव विशां पते ॥
बभूवुर् नागराणां च स्वैर् गुणैः प्रियदर्शनाः ॥

译文

Vaishampayana said: "Having come to Ekachakra, those sons of Kunti, the great chariot-warriors, lived a short while in the brahmana's dwelling, gazing upon delightful and varied forests, earthly regions, rivers, and lakes. They all went then for alms, and by their own virtues they became pleasing to behold to the townsfolk."

注释

Here royal men live modestly, by begging, and win hearts not through rank but through character. It is significant that these recent princes go about for alms: adversity has taught them humility, and they do not scorn the lot of those who ask. It is significant too that the townsfolk came to love them for "their own virtues": nobility declares itself of its own accord, and true breeding cannot be hidden beneath rags. Herein lies the lesson: virtue is the finest ornament, drawing love without rank or riches. So scripture shows that greatness of spirit shines through even amid poverty.
