Here begins a friendship destined to shatter. It is telling that in boyhood a brahmin and a prince are companions in play and study: a child's friendship knows no distinction of rank. Here is visible the purity of unbiased affection, as it is before power and pride corrupt it. Telling too is the contrast of two paths: Drupada rises to the throne while Drona remains in want — and the friends' paths diverge. Thus the scripture shows how peers, equal in youth, are parted by life onto different roads; and this disparity will become the ground for the future feud.
