Here it becomes clear how a grievance consumes the one who nurses it. It is telling that the dishonor 'never leaves Drupada's heart for a moment,' and he withers away: an unforgiven grievance gnaws from within, drying up body and spirit. Here the ruin wrought by harbored enmity reveals itself: whoever cherishes a wound tortures himself; revenge, before it strikes the enemy, wastes away the avenger. Telling too is that this unquenchable thirst for retribution will drive Drupada to a sacrifice for an avenging son — and will lead to the birth of Dhrishtadyumna and Draupadi. Thus the scripture shows that a grievance is an unwholesome yet powerful engine of destiny; and from Drupada's heart, dried up by wrath, the story will grow toward which all this leads.
