अराजा किल नो राज्ञः सखा भवितुम् अर्हति ॥

राजासि दक्षिणे कूले भागीरथ्याहम् उत्तरे ॥

Drona said: 'I again seek friendship with you, O lord of men; for a non-king cannot become a friend to us, a king. Therefore I laid claim to a share in your kingdom, Yajnasena: you are king on the southern bank of the Ganga, I on the northern.'

Here revenge dresses itself in the garments of reconciliation — and thus stings all the more. It is telling that Drona returns to Drupada his own words: 'a non-king cannot be friend to a king'; having taken half his kingdom, he pointedly makes himself 'equal' and offers friendship. Here is the refinement of wounded pride: Drona takes revenge not merely by defeat but by humiliation, turning Drupada's own haughty argument back against him. Telling too is that this 'mercy' — the return of half the kingdom — is more bitter than open punishment. Thus the scripture shows that vengeance cloaked in generosity wounds deepest of all; and Drona's barbed 'friendship' only inflames in Drupada an unquenchable thirst for retribution.
