भैक्षं च न तथा वीर लभ्यते कुरुनन्दन ॥

Kunti said: "For many long nights have we dwelt here, in the house of the brahmin, enjoying ourselves in this delightful town and living on alms, Yudhishthira. Whatever delightful forests and groves are here — all of them we have seen again and again, O tamer of foes; seen again, they no longer delight us as before, and alms, O hero, are no longer gathered as easily."

Here Kunti clothes the call of destiny in the arguments of reason. Her observation about growing weary is telling: what is seen again and again no longer delights — for it is in the very nature of worldly pleasure to fade with familiarity. Here is a general truth about earthly enjoyments: they grow dull through repetition, since they hold no imperishable fullness; only unending bliss in the Lord never grows stale. It is also telling that the mother cites the practical matter too — the dwindling alms: prudence reckons with daily need. Thus the scripture shows that wise Kunti gives her sons' true inclination a decorous, reasonable pretext; behind her sober words moves the hand of destiny, drawing them toward Panchala.
