भवत्या यन् मतं कार्यं तद् अस्माकं परं हितम् ॥
अनुजांस् तु न जानामि गच्छेयुर् नेति वा पुनः ॥

Here the eldest son shows both reverence for his mother and care for his brothers. His words are telling: his mother's will is for him "the highest good"; he honors obedience to a parent as dharma. Telling too is that he does not decide unilaterally for the younger brothers but wishes to learn their consent: the head of the family is not autocratic, but consults. Here is a model of good elder conduct — obedience to elders joined with respect for the younger. Thus the scripture reveals the harmony within the Pandava family: Yudhishthira bows before his mother and does not disregard his brothers; and from this concord a unanimous decision is born.
