Vaishampayana said: «Thus addressed, that gandharva related to the son of Kunti, Dhanañjaya, the tale renowned in the three worlds». The gandharva said: «Well then, I shall tell you this delightful tale in full, just as it is, O Partha, righteous, O best of the upholders of dharma. The word by which I called you "Tāpatya" — that I shall tell you; listen to me with a focused mind».

Here the narrator calls for listening "with a focused mind." It is telling that the gandharva, before beginning, demands undivided attention: a sacred tradition should not be heard with half an ear. Here is shown the rule of proper hearing (śravaṇa): benefit descends upon the one who listens with the whole heart. Thus the scripture shows that both narrator and listener alike share in the dignity of the tale; and Arjuna prepares to attend to the story of his forebears.
