आयुषा हि प्रकृष्टेन यदा नः खेद आविशत् ॥
तदास्माभिर् वधस् तात क्षत्रियैर् ईप्सितः स्वयम् ॥
निखातं तद् धि वै वित्तं केन चिद् भृगुवेश्मनि ॥
वैरायैव तदा न्यस्तं क्षत्रियान् कोपयिष्णुभिः ॥
किं हि वित्तेन नः कार्यं स्वर्गेप्सूनां द्विजर्षभ ॥
āyuṣā hi prakṛṣṭena yadā naḥ kheda āviśat ||
tadāsmābhir vadhas tāta kṣatriyair īpsitaḥ svayam ||
nikhātaṃ tad dhi vai vittaṃ kena cid bhṛguveśmani ||
vairāyaiva tadā nyastaṃ kṣatriyān kopayiṣṇubhiḥ ||
kiṃ hi vittena naḥ kāryaṃ svargepsūnāṃ dvijarṣabha ||
"For when weariness overtook us from our exceedingly long life, then death at the hands of kshatriyas was itself desired by us. That wealth was buried by someone in the house of Bhrigu purely for the sake of enmity, to anger the kshatriyas; for what use have we for wealth, we who long for the heavens, O bull among brahmins?"

Here the hidden truth is revealed: the Bhrigus themselves summoned their own death. It is significant that, worn out by an inordinately long life and longing for the heavens, they deliberately provoked the kshatriyas so as to be freed from the body: death was for them not a misfortune but a desired passage. For one set on what is higher, bodily death is not fearsome but longed for -- the body is only a shell on the path to heaven. Thus the scripture shows that the seeming atrocity was, in part, the fulfillment of the victims' own will; and Aurva's vengeance for the "slain" loses its ground, for they themselves sought this death.
