आदाय च न शक्तास्मि पुत्रान् सरितुम् अन्यतः ॥
न च त्यक्तुम् अहं शक्ता हृदयं दूयतीव मे ॥
कं नु जह्याम् अहं पुत्रं कम् आदाय व्रजाम्य् अहम् ॥

"From weakness my sons are unable to run to my refuge; and taking them, I am not able to flee to another place; and to abandon them I am not able — my heart as if burns; which son should I leave, and which, taking, should I go?"

Here the mother is tormented by an unresolvable choice. It is telling that Jarita can neither save them all nor choose one: a mother's heart does not divide its children. Thus is revealed the equality of a mother's love for all her children — and so the choice is unbearable for her. Thus the scripture reveals the anguish of having no way out; and in this extremity the children's own word will be heard.
