तं दृष्ट्वा विस्मितो राजा जगाम शिरसा कविम् ॥
चक्रे प्रसादं च तदा तस्य राज्ञो विभावसुः ॥
वरेण छन्दयाम् आस तं नृपं स्विष्टकृत्तमः ॥
अभयं च स जग्राह स्वसैन्ये वै महीपतिः ॥
ततः प्रभृति ये के चिद् अज्ञानात् तां पुरीं नृपाः ॥
जिगीषन्ति बलाद् राजंस् ते दह्यन्तीह वह्निना ॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā vismito rājā jagāma śirasā kavim ||
cakre prasādaṃ ca tadā tasya rājño vibhāvasuḥ ||
vareṇa chandayām āsa taṃ nṛpaṃ sviṣṭakṛttamaḥ ||
abhayaṃ ca sa jagrāha svasainye vai mahīpatiḥ ||
tataḥ prabhṛti ye ke cid ajñānāt tāṃ purīṃ nṛpāḥ ||
jigīṣanti balād rājaṃs te dahyantīha vahninā ||
“Seeing this, the astonished king bowed his head before the seer, and Vibhavasu [Agni] then showed mercy to that king. The foremost accepter of sacrifice honored that king with a boon; and the king accepted safety for his own army as a gift. From then on, whatever kings, out of ignorance, should wish to conquer that city by force, O king, they are burned here by fire”.

The god’s anger turns to mercy the moment the king humbly ‘bows his head.’ It is significant that not resistance but a bow disarms divine wrath: before the Lord, the one who acknowledges Him steps back and receives not punishment but a gift. The verse teaches that an encounter with the Supreme is decided by the disposition of the heart: obstinacy draws down flame, humility draws down blessing. And a gift sought in humility preserves one’s line for ages — for the mercy obtained by bowing is firmer than any stronghold raised by pride.
