Yudhishthira, the king and host of the sacrifice, does not decide on his own but asks the elder: "tell me that, O grandfather." It is significant that the lord of the earth, in the matter of honoring, bows to the wisdom of Bhishma rather than relying on his own preference. The verse teaches that even one clothed in the highest authority should seek the counsel of the most worthy where error is possible; humility in asking does not diminish the king but exalts him. Whoever, in a weighty decision, seeks not his own will but the guidance of the wise guards himself against partiality; and to seek the counsel of one who knows is the beginning of right judgment.
