भुक्तम् एतेन बह्व् अन्नं क्रीडता नगमूर्धनि ॥
इति ते भीष्म शृण्वानाः परं विस्मयम् आगताः ॥
यस्य चानेन धर्मज्ञ भुक्तम् अन्नं बलीयसः ॥
स चानेन हतः कंस इत्य् एतन् न महाद्भुतम् ॥
न ते श्रुतम् इदं भीष्म नूनं कथयतां सताम् ॥
यद् वक्ष्ये त्वाम् अधर्मज्ञ वाक्यं कुरुकुलाधम ॥
bhuktam etena bahv annaṃ krīḍatā nagamūrdhani ||
iti te bhīṣma śṛṇvānāḥ paraṃ vismayam āgatāḥ ||
yasya cānena dharmajña bhuktam annaṃ balīyasaḥ ||
sa cānena hataḥ kaṃsa ity etan na mahādbhutam ||
na te śrutam idaṃ bhīṣma nūnaṃ kathayatāṃ satām ||
yad vakṣye tvām adharmajña vākyaṃ kurukulādhama ||
"He ate much food, playing on the mountaintop — hearing this, O Bhishma, you came to the highest astonishment! And Kamsa, whose food he ate, O 'knower of dharma' — that mighty one was slain by him too; and that is no great marvel. Surely you have not heard, O Bhishma, from the good who recount such things, the word I shall now speak to you, O one who knows not dharma, O worst of the Kuru lineage:"

Especially venomous is the reproach concerning Kamsa: "whose food he ate, him he slew." Telling is the fact that Shishupala, wishing to expose supposed ingratitude, does not know the truth: Kamsa was no benefactor but a tyrant and a slayer of infants, who had sought Krishna's own life; his overthrow was not treachery toward bread and salt but deliverance for the people. The verse teaches how crookedly malice judges: it calls deliverance a crime, and the execution of a tyrant ingratitude. Thus a perverse heart turns every notion upside down, for it measures not by truth but by enmity. And the accuser, proud of his knowledge of dharma, exposes only his own ignorance of it — mistaking a villain for a benefactor.
