Black-marked and white, moon-hued yak-tails, and abundant sweet honey born of Himavat's flowers; garlands from the Northern Kurus borne by the waters, and most healing herbs from northern Kailāsa. The mountain peoples, having brought yet another tribute, stand bowed at the gate of King Ajātaśatru, until admitted.

The mountain folk come 'bowed' to Ajātaśatru — 'he who has no enemy.' The very name is telling: one who has no enemy gathers not fear but reverence; submission to him is willing, as befits one who brings peace to all. The verse teaches that righteous rule breeds not dread but the bowing of the heart: where the ruler is no one's enemy, even distant tribes bow without compulsion. But to the envious even this humility of nations is only cause for envy, since he measures not by love but by possession. The name 'Ajātaśatru' exposes Duryodhana: here is one truly without an enemy, and there is one who is his own worst enemy.
