Amid this inventory of riches shines the image of Draupadi: the queen, 'herself not eating,' watches over it so that all are fed — 'down to hunchbacks and dwarfs.' It is telling that the mistress of the vastest kingdom serves before she eats, and attends to the least, the humblest of the household. The verse teaches that true greatness lies in service: the queen embodies the dharma of a mistress of the house, for whom her own hunger comes after the hunger of all. And the conclusion is remarkable: two do not pay tribute — the Panchalas by kinship, the Vrishnis by friendship. The bonds of blood and love stand above tribute: where there is kinship and friendship, none is paid — there one belongs. Thus the text subtly exalts love above all tribute: Krishna and his people are bound to the Pandavas not by taxation, but by the heart.
