Order is strict even for the wealthiest: 'when you have made your gifts, then you may enter.' It is telling that entry to the sanctum is conditioned on an offering — not as a bribe, but as a sign of right disposition: one approaches the sacrifice having brought one's own. The verse teaches that approaching the sacred demands not empty hands but a heart ready to give: the gift at the gate is a symbol of self-surrender. And a thousand war elephants from each is not ransom for entry but a measure of the givers' devotion. Duryodhana sees only a wall of elephants; but behind it stands the law by which one enters the presence of the Highest only after having given. Whoever wishes to enter the hall of the Lord must first offer — himself.
