जेता रिपूणां राज-पुत्रस् तरस्वीjetā ripūṇāṃ rāja-putras tarasvīconqueror of enemies, the swift prince --
अनर्हता लोक-वीरेण तेनanarhatā loka-vīreṇa tenathough unworthy of it, the world's hero,
दीव्याम्य् अहं शकुने फल्गुनेनdīvyāmy ahaṃ śakune phalgunenaI play with Phalguna [Arjuna], O Shakuni.'

One after another the defenders are staked -- Arjuna, who "ferries us across in battle like a boat," and Bhima, "the leader of our battles." It is telling that the very guardians are lost: the hand that surrenders the brothers surrenders also the shield that protected it. The verse teaches how self-destructive passion is: it stakes the very thing on which the life of the one staking depends. And the lofty praises with which Yudhishthira crowns his brothers before losing them are only more bitter for it: he sees their greatness -- and stakes it anyway. Thus gambling turns love and praise into a eulogy spoken over the living. Whoever loses his defenders surrenders himself to defenselessness; and having left Arjuna and Bhima on the table, the king exposed himself to the last and most terrible move.
