कर्ण उवाच
या नः श्रुता मनुष्येषु स्त्रियो रूपेण संमताः ॥
तासाम् एतादृशं कर्म न कस्यां चन शुश्रुमः ॥
क्रोधाविष्टेषु पार्थेषु धार्तराष्ट्रेषु चाप्य् अति ॥
द्रौपदी पाण्डुपुत्राणां कृष्णा शान्तिर् इहाभवत् ॥
अप्लवे ऽम्भसि मग्नानाम् अप्रतिष्ठे निमज्जताम् ॥
पाञ्चाली पाण्डुपुत्राणां नौर् एषा पारगाभवत् ॥

yā naḥ śrutā manuṣyeṣu striyo rūpeṇa saṃmatāḥ ||
tāsām etādṛśaṃ karma na kasyāṃ cana śuśrumaḥ ||
krodhāviṣṭeṣu pārtheṣu dhārtarāṣṭreṣu cāpy ati ||
draupadī pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ kṛṣṇā śāntir ihābhavat ||
aplave 'mbhasi magnānām apratiṣṭhe nimajjatām ||
pāñcālī pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ naur eṣā pāragābhavat ||
[Vaishampayana:] However many wives renowned among men for their beauty we have heard of, we have never heard of such a deed by any of them. When the Parthas and the sons of Dhritarashtra were overcome with anger beyond measure, Krishna Draupadi became here the peace-bringer for the sons of Pandu. For those sinking in bottomless waters, plunging into an abyss without support, Panchali became for the sons of Pandu a boat that carries them to the far shore.

The image of the boat runs deep: those drowning in a hopeless abyss are saved not by strength but by the righteousness of a single devoted soul. It is significant that she who was dragged off as plunder proves to be the support of her warrior-lords — thus the one who seemed weakest shows herself firmest in dharma. The verse teaches that salvation often comes from where it is least expected; that fidelity and purity are stronger than weapons and kingdoms; and that in the hour when men are darkened by wrath and rendered powerless, a righteous wife becomes their only ship across the abyss.
