धर्मतः पाण्डुपुत्रा वै वनं गच्छन्ति निर्जिताः ॥

वैरं प्रत्यानयिष्यन्ति मम दुःखाय पाण्डवाः ॥

पुत्रार्थम् अयजत् क्रोधाद् वधाय मम भारत ॥
याजोपयाजतपसा पुत्रं लेभे स पावकात् ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नं द्रौपदीं च वेदीमध्यात् सुमध्यमाम् ॥

[Drona:] 'By dharma the sons of Pandu go to the forest, defeated; and for twelve years they will dwell in the forest. Having fulfilled the vow of brahmacharya, overcome by anger and indignation, the Pandavas will renew their enmity — to my sorrow. But Drupada, cast down from his kingdom by me in a quarrel between friends, for the sake of a son performed a sacrifice out of wrath — for my slaying, O Bharata. Through the austerity of Yaja and Upayaja he obtained a son from the fire — Dhrishtadyumna, and slender-waisted Draupadi from the midst of the altar.'

Drona foresees what is coming without self-deception: he knows the Pandavas will return with retribution, and that his own enmity with Drupada has brought forth his own destruction. Thus evil sown in the past — the casting down of a friend — bears its fruit at the appointed hour: Dhrishtadyumna is born for Drona's death. Here appears the inescapability of the law of consequence: an old quarrel and present complicity in wrongdoing weave together into a single fate. The verse teaches that our past deeds do not die but ripen until they bear fruit; that one who once did harm meets it returned across the years; and that even the wise, foreseeing this, may still be powerless to change the path onto which their own former deeds have placed them.
