Yudhishthira said: ‘O brahmin, my desire for means is not for the enjoyment of wealth; I desire it for the support of brahmins, not out of greed. How could one such as I, living the householder's life, fail to feed and sustain those who follow him? The sharing of food is enjoined upon all beings; and the householder must give also to those who do not cook for themselves. Grass, ground, water, and a fourth — kind speech — should never fail in the homes of good people. To the suffering one should give a bed, to the weary a seat, to the thirsty drink, to the hungry food. One should give a glance, one's mind, and gentle speech, going out to meet the guest and honoring him rightly. The agnihotra, the oxen, kinsmen, guests, relatives, children, and wives will consume with fire the one who fails to honor them. One should not cook food only for oneself, nor kill living beings in vain, nor eat oneself what has not been duly offered. For dogs, outcastes, and birds one should set food upon the ground: this is called the vaishvadeva, performed morning and evening. Therefore one should live eating the remnant and ever partaking of nectar; the remnant after the servants is called vighasa, and the remnant of sacrifice is called amrita. Whoever follows this way of life as a householder is said to hold the highest dharma. What do you think of this, O brahmin?’

Yudhishthira reveals an important distinction: he does not seek wealth for pleasure, but the means to fulfill his duty. The householder's dharma is to feed, to share, to welcome, to speak gently, and to remember even those standing at the edge of society. In this way possessions become not a cause for pride but an instrument of sacrifice.
