Vidura said: ‘O lord of men, the threefold aim of life is rooted in dharma, and this kingdom too is said to be rooted in dharma. Therefore, O king, abiding in dharma to the best of your power, protect all your sons — and the sons of Kunti as well. But that dharma was violated in the assembly by sinners led by the son of Subala: your son, having summoned the truthful son of Kunti to the game of dice, defeated him. I see a remedy for what remains of this ill-conceived affair: let the sons of Pandu receive all that was formerly given to them by you. The highest dharma is this: a king should be content with what is his own and not covet what belongs to another. Your foremost task is to satisfy them and humble Shakuni. If you wish to preserve anything for your own sons, do it quickly. But if you do not, the destruction of the Kurus is certain: enraged, Bhimasena and Arjuna will leave no remnant of the enemy's army. Those whose warrior is Savyasachin, skilled in arms, whose bow is the Gandiva, the essence of the world, and whose fighter is mighty-armed Bhima — what in this world could be beyond their reach?’

Vidura's counsel is utterly simple: return what is not yours and halt the evil before it hardens into fate. He does not flatter the king, nor does he seek a compromise with adharma. Mercy toward Duryodhana without truth would become cruelty toward the entire family.
