कैरातम् वेषम् आस्थाय काञ्चनद्रुमसंनिभम् विभ्राजमानः वपुषा गिरिः मेरुः इव अपरःkairātam veṣam āsthāya kāñcanadrumasaṃnibham vibhrājamānaḥ vapuṣā giriḥ meruḥ iva aparaḥtook on the form of a Kirata, resplendent like a golden tree, his body shining as though he were a second Mount Meru,
श्रीमत् धनुः उपादाय शरान् च आशीविषोपमान् निष्पपात महार्चिष्मान् दहन् कक्षम् इव अनलःśrīmat dhanuḥ upādāya śarān ca āśīviṣopamān niṣpapāta mahārciṣmān dahan kakṣam iva analaḥand taking up his splendid bow and arrows like venomous serpents, he came forth, blazing like fire consuming dry grass,
देव्या सह उमया श्रीमान् समानव्रतवेषया नानावेषधरैः हृष्टैः भूतैः अनुगतः तदाdevyā saha umayā śrīmān samānavrataveṣayā nānāveṣadharaiḥ hṛṣṭaiḥ bhūtaiḥ anugataḥ tadātogether with the radiant goddess Uma, who had taken the same ascetic guise, and followed by joyful bhutas in various forms,
किरातवेषप्रच्छन्नः स्त्रीभिः च अनु सहस्रशः अशोभत तदा राजन् स देवः अतीव भारतkirātaveṣapracchannaḥ strībhiḥ ca anu sahasraśaḥ aśobhata tadā rājan sa devaḥ atīva bhāratahidden in the guise of a Kirata and attended by thousands of women, this god then shone with extraordinary splendor, O king, O Bharata.
क्षणेन तत् वनम् सर्वम् निःशब्दम् अभवत् तदा नादः प्रस्रवणानाम् च पक्षिणाम् च अपि उपारमत्kṣaṇena tat vanam sarvam niḥśabdam abhavat tadā nādaḥ prasravaṇānām ca pakṣiṇām ca api upāramatIn an instant the whole forest fell silent; the sound of streams and of birds ceased as well.
स संनिकर्षम् आगम्य पार्थस्य अक्लिष्टकर्मणः मूकम् नाम दितेः पुत्रम् ददर्श अद्भुतदर्शनम्sa saṃnikarṣam āgamya pārthasya akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ mūkam nāma diteḥ putram dadarśa adbhutadarśanamDrawing near to the untiring Partha, he saw the son of Diti named Muka, wondrous to behold,
वाराहम् रूपम् आस्थाय तर्कयन्तम् इव अर्जुनम् हन्तुम् परमदुष्टात्मा तम् उवाच अथ फल्गुनःvārāham rūpam āsthāya tarkayantam iva arjunam hantum paramaduṣṭātmā tam uvāca atha phalgunaḥwho had taken the form of a boar and, most wicked, seemed to be stalking Arjuna in order to kill him; then Phalguna spoke to him.
गाण्डीवम् धनुः आदाय शरान् च आशीविषोपमान् सज्यम् धनुःवरम् कृत्वा ज्याघोषेण निनादयन्gāṇḍīvam dhanuḥ ādāya śarān ca āśīviṣopamān sajyam dhanuḥvaram kṛtvā jyāghoṣeṇa ninādayanTaking up the bow Gandiva and arrows like venomous serpents, stringing the finest of bows and making its string resound,
यत् माम् प्रार्थयसे हन्तुम् अनागसम् इह आगतम् तस्मात् त्वाम् पूर्वम् एव अहम् नेष्यामि यमसादनम्yat mām prārthayase hantum anāgasam iha āgatam tasmāt tvām pūrvam eva aham neṣyāmi yamasādanam"since you seek to kill me, though I am guiltless and have come here, for this I shall send you first to the abode of Yama."
तम् दृष्ट्वा प्रहरिष्यन्तम् फल्गुनम् दृढधन्विनम् किरातरूपी सहसा वारयाम् आस शंकरःtam dṛṣṭvā prahariṣyantam phalgunam dṛḍhadhanvinam kirātarūpī sahasā vārayām āsa śaṃkaraḥSeeing Phalguna of the steady bow about to strike, Shankara in the form of a Kirata suddenly stopped him,
मया एष प्रार्थितः पूर्वम् नीलमेघसमप्रभः अनादृत्य एव तत् वाक्यम् प्रजहार अथ फल्गुनःmayā eṣa prārthitaḥ pūrvam nīlameghasamaprabhaḥ anādṛtya eva tat vākyam prajahāra atha phalgunaḥ"this one, gleaming like a dark cloud, was marked by me first." But Phalguna, disregarding these words, struck.
किरातः च समम् तस्मिन् एकलक्ष्ये महाद्युतिः प्रमुमोच अशनिप्रख्यम् शरम् अग्निशिखोपमम्kirātaḥ ca samam tasmin ekalakṣye mahādyutiḥ pramumoca aśaniprakhyam śaram agniśikhopamamAnd the Kirata, great in splendor, at the same instant loosed at the same mark an arrow like a thunderbolt, resembling a tongue of fire.
तौ मुक्तौ सायकौ ताभ्याम् समम् तत्र निपेततुः मूकस्य गात्रे विस्तीर्णे शैलसंहनने तदाtau muktau sāyakau tābhyām samam tatra nipetatuḥ mūkasya gātre vistīrṇe śailasaṃhanane tadāThe two arrows they had loosed fell at the same moment upon the broad body of Muka, solid as a mountain.
यथा अशनिविनिष्पेषः वज्रस्य इव च पर्वते तथा तयोः संनिपातः शरयोः अभवत् तदाyathā aśaniviniṣpeṣaḥ vajrasya iva ca parvate tathā tayoḥ saṃnipātaḥ śarayoḥ abhavat tadāAs the crash of a thunderbolt or of Indra's vajra upon a mountain, so was the collision of their arrows.
स विद्धः बहुभिः बाणैः दीप्तास्यैः पन्नगैः इव ममार राक्षसम् रूपम् भूयः कृत्वा विभीषणम्sa viddhaḥ bahubhiḥ bāṇaiḥ dīptāsyaiḥ pannagaiḥ iva mamāra rākṣasam rūpam bhūyaḥ kṛtvā vibhīṣaṇamPierced by many arrows with blazing points like serpents, he died, once more assuming the fearsome form of a rakshasa.
