ददर्श अथ ततः जिष्णुः पुरुषम् काञ्चनप्रभम् किरातवेषप्रच्छन्नम् स्त्रीसहायम् अमित्रहा तम् अब्रवीत् प्रीतमनाः कौन्तेयः प्रहसन् इवdadarśa atha tataḥ jiṣṇuḥ puruṣam kāñcanaprabham kirātaveṣapracchannam strīsahāyam amitrahā tam abravīt prītamanāḥ kaunteyaḥ prahasan ivaThen Jishnu, slayer of foes, saw a man of golden radiance, hidden in the guise of a Kirata and accompanied by women; the son of Kunti, with a glad heart, as though smiling, said to him:
कः भवान् अटते शून्ये वने स्त्रीगणसंवृतः न त्वम् अस्मिन् वने घोरे बिभेषि कनकप्रभkaḥ bhavān aṭate śūnye vane strīgaṇasaṃvṛtaḥ na tvam asmin vane ghore bibheṣi kanakaprabha"Who are you, wandering in this empty forest surrounded by a throng of women? You show no fear in this dreadful forest, O golden-radiant one.
किमर्थम् च त्वया विद्धः मृगः अयम् मत्परिग्रहः मया अभिपन्नः पूर्वम् हि राक्षसः अयम् इह आगतःkimartham ca tvayā viddhaḥ mṛgaḥ ayam matparigrahaḥ mayā abhipannaḥ pūrvam hi rākṣasaḥ ayam iha āgataḥAnd why have you struck this beast, my quarry? For this rakshasa, who came here, was overtaken by me first.
कामात् परिभवात् वा अपि न मे जीवन् विमोक्ष्यसे न हि एष मृगयाधर्मः यः त्वया अद्य कृतः मयि तेन त्वाम् भ्रंशयिष्यामि जीवितात् पर्वताश्रयkāmāt paribhavāt vā api na me jīvan vimokṣyase na hi eṣa mṛgayādharmaḥ yaḥ tvayā adya kṛtaḥ mayi tena tvām bhraṃśayiṣyāmi jīvitāt parvatāśrayaWhether from desire or from contempt, you shall not escape me alive; for what you have done to me today is not the code of the hunt. For this I shall rob you of your life, dweller of the mountains."
इति उक्तः पाण्डवेयेन किरातः प्रहसन् इव उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा पाण्डवम् सव्यसाचिनम्iti uktaḥ pāṇḍaveyena kirātaḥ prahasan iva uvāca ślakṣṇayā vācā pāṇḍavam savyasācinamThus addressed by the Pandava, the Kirata, as though smiling, said in a gentle voice to the Pandava Savyasachin:
मम एव अयम् लक्ष्यभूतः पूर्वम् एव परिग्रहः मम एव च प्रहारेण जीवितात् व्यवरोपितःmama eva ayam lakṣyabhūtaḥ pūrvam eva parigrahaḥ mama eva ca prahāreṇa jīvitāt vyavaropitaḥ"He was my mark, and he was my quarry first; it was by my blow alone that he was deprived of life.
दोषान् स्वान् न अर्हसे अन्यस्मै वक्तुम् स्वबलदर्पितः अभिषक्तः अस्मि मन्दात्मन् न मे जीवन् विमोक्ष्यसेdoṣān svān na arhase anyasmai vaktum svabaladarpitaḥ abhiṣaktaḥ asmi mandātman na me jīvan vimokṣyaseYou ought not, drunk with your own strength, blame another for your own faults; you have challenged me, fool — you shall not escape me alive.
स्थिरः भवस्व मोक्ष्यामि सायकान् अशनीन् इव घटस्व परया शक्त्या मुञ्च त्वम् अपि सायकान्sthiraḥ bhavasva mokṣyāmi sāyakān aśanīn iva ghaṭasva parayā śaktyā muñca tvam api sāyakānStand firm — I shall loose arrows like thunderbolts; gather your utmost strength and you too let your arrows fly."
ततः तौ तत्र संरब्धौ गर्जमानौ मुहुः मुहुः शरैः आशीविषाकारैः ततक्षाते परस्परम्tataḥ tau tatra saṃrabdhau garjamānau muhuḥ muhuḥ śaraiḥ āśīviṣākāraiḥ tatakṣāte parasparamThen both of them, enraged, roaring again and again, began to tear at each other with arrows shaped like venomous serpents.
ततः अर्जुनः शरवर्षम् किराते समवासृजत् तत् प्रसन्नेन मनसा प्रतिजग्राह शंकरःtataḥ arjunaḥ śaravarṣam kirāte samavāsṛjat tat prasannena manasā pratijagrāha śaṃkaraḥThen Arjuna loosed a shower of arrows at the Kirata; Shankara received it with a serene mind.
मुहूर्तम् शरवर्षम् तत् प्रतिगृह्य पिनाकधृक् अक्षतेन शरीरेण तस्थौ गिरिः इव अचलःmuhūrtam śaravarṣam tat pratigṛhya pinākadhṛk akṣatena śarīreṇa tasthau giriḥ iva acalaḥHaving withstood that shower of arrows for a time, the bearer of the Pinaka stood with his body unhurt, like an unmoving mountain.
स दृष्ट्वा बाणवर्षम् तत् मोघीभूतम् धनंजयः परमम् विस्मयम् चक्रे साधु साधु इति च अब्रवीत्sa dṛṣṭvā bāṇavarṣam tat moghībhūtam dhanaṃjayaḥ paramam vismayam cakre sādhu sādhu iti ca abravītSeeing that shower of arrows rendered futile, Dhananjaya was struck with the greatest wonder and exclaimed, "Well done, well done!
अहो अयम् सुकुमाराङ्गः हिमवच्छिखरआलयः गाण्डीवमुक्तान् नाराचान् प्रतिगृह्णाति अविह्वलःaho ayam sukumārāṅgaḥ himavacchikharaālayaḥ gāṇḍīvamuktān nārācān pratigṛhṇāti avihvalaḥAh, this soft-limbed dweller upon the peak of Himavat receives the arrows loosed from Gandiva without flinching.
कः अयम् देवः भवेत् साक्षात् रुद्रः यक्षः सुरेश्वरः विद्यते हि गिरिश्रेष्ठे त्रिदशानाम् समागमःkaḥ ayam devaḥ bhavet sākṣāt rudraḥ yakṣaḥ sureśvaraḥ vidyate hi giriśreṣṭhe tridaśānām samāgamaḥWho might this be — a god in person, Rudra, a yaksha, or the lord of the gods? For upon the finest of mountains the thirty gods are known to gather.
न हि मद्बाणजालानाम् उत्सृष्टानाम् सहस्रशः शक्तः अन्यः सहितुम् वेगम् ऋते देवम् पिनाकिनम्na hi madbāṇajālānām utsṛṣṭānām sahasraśaḥ śaktaḥ anyaḥ sahitum vegam ṛte devam pinākinamIndeed no one but the god who bears the Pinaka is able to withstand the force of the thousands of arrow-webs I have loosed.
देवः वा यदि वा यक्षः रुद्रात् अन्यः व्यवस्थितः अहम् एनम् शरैः तीक्ष्णैः नयामि यमसादनम्devaḥ vā yadi vā yakṣaḥ rudrāt anyaḥ vyavasthitaḥ aham enam śaraiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ nayāmi yamasādanamIf he standing here be a god or a yaksha other than Rudra, I shall send him with sharp arrows to the abode of Yama."
ततः हृष्टमनाः जिष्णुः नाराचान् मर्मभेदिनः व्यसृजत् शतधा राजन् मयूखान् इव भास्करःtataḥ hṛṣṭamanāḥ jiṣṇuḥ nārācān marmabhedinaḥ vyasṛjat śatadhā rājan mayūkhān iva bhāskaraḥThen Jishnu, glad at heart, loosed by the hundred his marrow-piercing narachas, O king, as the sun looses its rays.
तान् प्रसन्नेन मनसा भगवान् लोकभावनः शूलपाणिः प्रत्यगृह्णात् शिलावर्षम् इव अचलःtān prasannena manasā bhagavān lokabhāvanaḥ śūlapāṇiḥ pratyagṛhṇāt śilāvarṣam iva acalaḥThese the Blessed One, creator of the worlds, the spear-bearer, received with a serene mind, as an unmoving mountain receives a shower of rocks.
क्षणेन क्षीणबाणः अथ संवृत्तः फल्गुनः तदा वित्रासम् च जगाम अथ तम् दृष्ट्वा शरसंक्षयम्kṣaṇena kṣīṇabāṇaḥ atha saṃvṛttaḥ phalgunaḥ tadā vitrāsam ca jagāma atha tam dṛṣṭvā śarasaṃkṣayamIn a moment Phalguna then found his arrows spent, and seeing this exhaustion of his arrows, he was seized with dismay.
