Bhaimī said to them: "In every land, in the assemblies of people, speak these words again and again, again and again: 'Where are you, gambler, who cut off half of my garment and departed, abandoning your beloved, devoted wife asleep in the forest? As you bade her, she waits there for you, burning with grief, covered by half a garment. Have mercy, O hero, on her who weeps constantly in this sorrow, and give an answer. This too must be said, that he may take pity on me: fire, fanned by the wind, burns the forest. A wife must always be maintained and protected by her husband; why, then, has both vanished for you, knower of dharma? You were always known as wise, well-born, and compassionate; can it be that, through the ruin of my fortune, you have become without pity? Have mercy on me, great archer, bull among men: it was from you yourself that I heard that gentleness and compassion are the highest dharma.' If anyone answers you when you speak these words, that man must be known in every particular — who he is and where he dwells. Bring me his answer quickly. And act so that no one may learn that you walk at Bhīma's command, and so that you return. Whether he is prosperous or poor, whether he desires wealth — learn what he intends to do."

Damayantī composes her message as a mirror held up to Nala. She does not name him, but appeals to his conscience with the very words of dharma she once heard from his own lips.
