नलं मृगयितुं राजंस् तथा व्यसनिनं तदा ॥
ते पुराणि सराष्ट्राणि ग्रामान् घोषांस् तथाश्रमान् ॥
अन्वेषन्तो नलं राजन् नाधिजग्मुर् द्विजातयः ॥
तच् च वाक्यं तथा सर्वे तत्र तत्र विशां पते ॥
श्रावयां चक्रिरे विप्रा दमयन्त्या यथेरितम् ॥
evam uktās tv agacchaṃs te brāhmaṇāḥ sarvatodiśam ||
nalaṃ mṛgayituṃ rājaṃs tathā vyasaninaṃ tadā ||
te purāṇi sarāṣṭrāṇi grāmān ghoṣāṃs tathāśramān ||
anveṣanto nalaṃ rājan nādhijagmur dvijātayaḥ ||
tac ca vākyaṃ tathā sarve tatra tatra viśāṃ pate ||
śrāvayāṃ cakrire viprā damayantyā yatheritam ||
Thus instructed, the brāhmaṇas went forth in every direction to seek Nala in his misfortune, O king. They searched through cities and their realms, villages, herdsmen's settlements, and hermitages, seeking Nala, but the twice-born found him not, O king. Yet everywhere, O lord of men, all of them proclaimed those very words, just as Damayantī had spoken them.
