सगर उवाच
पितुश् च ते ऽहं त्यागेन पुत्राणां निधनेन च ॥
अलाभेन तथाश्वस्य परितप्यामि पुत्रक ॥
तस्माद् दुःखाभिसंतप्तं यज्ञविघ्नाच् च मोहितम् ॥
हयस्यानयनात् पौत्र नरकान् मां समुद्धर ॥
लोमश उवाच
अंशुमान् एवम् उक्तस् तु सगरेण महात्मना ॥
जगाम दुःखात् तं देशं यत्र वै दारिता मही ॥
स तु तेनैव मार्गेण समुद्रं प्रविवेश ह ॥
अपश्यच् च महात्मानं कपिलं तुरगं च तम् ॥
स दृष्ट्वा तेजसो राशिं पुराणम् ऋषिसत्तमम् ॥
प्रणम्य शिरसा भूमौ कार्यम् अस्मै न्यवेदयत् ॥
ततः प्रीतो महातेजाः कलिपो ऽंशुमतो ऽभवत् ॥
उवाच चैनं धर्मात्मा वरदो ऽस्मीति भारत ॥
स वव्रे तुरगं तत्र प्रथमं यज्ञकारणात् ॥
द्वितीयम् उदकं वव्रे पितॄणां पावनेप्सया ॥
तम् उवाच महातेजाः कपिलो मुनिपुंगवः ॥
ददानि तव भद्रं ते यद् यत् प्रार्थयसे ऽनघ ॥
त्वयि क्षमा च धर्मश् च सत्यं चापि प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥
त्वया कृतार्थः सगरः पुत्रवांश् च त्वया पिता ॥
तव चैव प्रभावेन स्वर्गं यास्यन्ति सागराः ॥
पौत्रश् च ते त्रिपथगां त्रिदिवाद् आनयिष्यति ॥
पावनार्थं सागराणां तोषयित्वा महेश्वरम् ॥
हयं नयस्व भद्रं ते यज्ञियं नरपुंगव ॥
यज्ञः समाप्यतां तात सगरस्य महात्मनः ॥

aṃśumān evam uktas tu sagareṇa mahātmanā ||
jagāma duḥkhāt taṃ deśaṃ yatra vai dāritā mahī ||
sa tu tenaiva mārgeṇa samudraṃ praviveśa ha ||
apaśyac ca mahātmānaṃ kapilaṃ turagaṃ ca tam ||
sa dṛṣṭvā tejaso rāśiṃ purāṇam ṛṣisattamam ||
praṇamya śirasā bhūmau kāryam asmai nyavedayat ||
tataḥ prīto mahātejāḥ kalipo 'ṃśumato 'bhavat ||
uvāca cainaṃ dharmātmā varado 'smīti bhārata ||
sa vavre turagaṃ tatra prathamaṃ yajñakāraṇāt ||
dvitīyam udakaṃ vavre pitṝṇāṃ pāvanepsayā ||
tam uvāca mahātejāḥ kapilo munipuṃgavaḥ ||
dadāni tava bhadraṃ te yad yat prārthayase 'nagha ||
tvayi kṣamā ca dharmaś ca satyaṃ cāpi pratiṣṭhitam ||
tvayā kṛtārthaḥ sagaraḥ putravāṃś ca tvayā pitā ||
tava caiva prabhāvena svargaṃ yāsyanti sāgarāḥ ||
pautraś ca te tripathagāṃ tridivād ānayiṣyati ||
pāvanārthaṃ sāgarāṇāṃ toṣayitvā maheśvaram ||
hayaṃ nayasva bhadraṃ te yajñiyaṃ narapuṃgava ||
yajñaḥ samāpyatāṃ tāta sagarasya mahātmanaḥ ||
Sagara said: "Because of your father's banishment, the death of my sons, and the loss of the horse, I suffer, child. Therefore save me -- burned by grief and bewildered by this obstacle to the sacrifice -- from hell, grandson, by bringing back the horse." Lomasha said: "Thus instructed by the great Sagara, Amshuman went in sorrow to the place where the earth had been torn open. By that same path he entered the ocean and saw the great-souled Kapila and that horse. Seeing the mass of radiance, the ancient and foremost of sages, he bowed his head to the ground and told him his purpose. Then the greatly radiant Kapila was pleased with Amshuman and said to him, righteous of soul: 'I am a granter of boons.' Amshuman first asked there for the horse, for the sake of the sacrifice, and as a second boon asked for water, wishing to purify his forefathers. The greatly radiant Kapila, the foremost of sages, said to him: 'I grant you everything, O blameless one, that you ask. In you are established forbearance, dharma, and truth. Through you Sagara has attained his purpose, and through you your father has become as one who has a son. By your very power the sons of Sagara will go to heaven; and your grandson, having propitiated Maheshvara, will bring the Tripathaga down from the heavens to purify the sons of Sagara. Lead the sacrificial horse, best of men. Let the sacrifice of the great Sagara be completed.'"

Amshuman does what sixty thousand could not: he approaches Kapila with humility. For this he receives both the horse for the sacrifice and the promise of his family's salvation.
