Ravana heard of the deaths of Prahasta and Dhumraksha together with their army, sighed deeply, leapt up from his splendid throne, and said, "The time for Kumbhakarna's deed has come." With loud musical instruments he woke the sleeping, extremely drowsy Kumbhakarna. Having with great effort brought him to his senses, Ravana said: "Blessed are you, Kumbhakarna, who sleep such a sleep and do not know this dreadful time. Rama has crossed the ocean by a bridge together with the vanaras, scorns all of us, and works great slaughter. I carried off his wife, Sita, called Janaki; he has come to free her, having built a bridge across the great ocean. Our great kinsmen headed by Prahasta have been slain. Rama has no other slayer but you, tormentor of foes. Arm yourself and go out today; kill Rama and the other enemies in battle. The younger brothers of Dushana, Vajravega and Pramathin, will go with you with great force." Having said this, the lord of the rakshasas gave them their instructions. Those heroes replied, "So be it," and quickly went out from the city, putting Kumbhakarna in front.
