tato yodhāḥ parīpsantaḥ śāradvatam amarṣaṇam ||
sarvataḥ samare pārthaṃ śaravarṣair avākiran ||
tato virāṭasya sutaḥ savyam āvṛtya vājinaḥ ||
yamakaṃ maṇḍalaṃ kṛtvā tān yodhān pratyavārayat ||
tataḥ kṛpam upādāya virathaṃ te nararṣabhāḥ ||
apājahrur mahāvegāḥ kuntīputrād dhanaṃjayāt ||
Kripa nonetheless continued the fight and wounded Partha again. Then Arjuna loosed thirteen arrows: with some he struck the yoke and the horses, with another he took off the charioteer’s head, with others he smashed the axles and the banner, and with the last he pierced Kripa’s chest. Deprived of his chariot, Kripa leaped to the ground with a mace and hurled it at Arjuna, but Partha turned it back with his arrows. Then the Kuru warriors hurried to shield Gautama and showered Dhananjaya with arrows. Uttara swiftly wheeled the horses in circles, and the Kurus carried Kripa away from Partha, now left without his chariot.’

Kripa is saved not by any weakness in Arjuna but by the loyalty of his comrades. Even on the wrong side, bonds of duty remain, and the text refuses to flatten people into a single trait.
