दुःखानि हि महात्मानः प्राप्नुवन्ति युधिष्ठिर ॥
देवैर् अपि हि दुःखानि प्राप्तानि जगतीपते ॥
इन्द्रेण श्रूयते राजन् सभार्येण महात्मना ॥
अनुभूतं महद् दुःखं देवराजेन भारत ॥

This passage (5.8.36-37) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolds even as war has become unavoidable.
