ततः प्रविश्यानुमते नृपस्य; महद् वेश्म प्राज्ञशूरार्यगुप्तम् ॥
सिंहासनस्थं पार्थिवम् आससाद; वैचित्रवीर्यं प्राञ्जलिः सूतपुत्रः ॥
संजय उवाच
संजयो ऽहं भूमिपते नमस् ते; प्राप्तो ऽस्मि गत्वा नरदेव पाण्डवान् ॥
अभिवाद्य त्वां पाण्डुपुत्रो मनस्वी; युधिष्ठिरः कुशलं चान्वपृच्छत् ॥
स ते पुत्रान् पृच्छति प्रीयमाणः; कच्चित् पुत्रैः प्रीयसे नप्तृभिश् च ॥
तथा सुहृद्भिः सचिवैश् च राजन्; ये चापि त्वाम् उपजीवन्ति तैश् च ॥
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
अभ्येत्य त्वां तात वदामि संजय; अजातशत्रुं च सुखेन पार्थम् ॥
कच्चित् स राजा कुशली सपुत्रः; सहामात्यः सानुजः कौरवाणाम् ॥
संजय उवाच
सहामात्यः कुशली पाण्डुपुत्रो; भूयश् चातो यच् च ते ऽग्रे मनो ऽभूत् ॥
निर्णिक्तधर्मार्थकरो मनस्वी; बहुश्रुतो दृष्टिमाञ् शीलवांश् च ॥

tathā suhṛdbhiḥ sacivaiś ca rājan; ye cāpi tvām upajīvanti taiś ca ||
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca
abhyetya tvāṃ tāta vadāmi saṃjaya; ajātaśatruṃ ca sukhena pārtham ||
kaccit sa rājā kuśalī saputraḥ; sahāmātyaḥ sānujaḥ kauravāṇām ||
saṃjaya uvāca
sahāmātyaḥ kuśalī pāṇḍuputro; bhūyaś cāto yac ca te 'gre mano 'bhūt ||
nirṇiktadharmārthakaro manasvī; bahuśruto dṛṣṭimāñ śīlavāṃś ca ||
Vaishampayana: And Sanjaya addressed him with these words: 'I am Sanjaya, O king. I bow before you. O foremost of men, going from here, I found the sons of Pandu. Having offered you greeting, the son of Pandu, the wise Yudhishthira, asked after your well-being. And greatly pleased, he also asks about your sons and asks you whether you are happy with your sons, grandsons, friends and counselors, and also, O king, with all those who depend on you.' 'Dhritarashtra said: "O child, blessing Ajatashatru, I ask you, O Sanjaya, whether that king of the Kauravas, the son of Pritha, is well, together with his sons, brothers and counselors."' 'Sanjaya said: "It is well with the son of Pandu, together with his counselors. He wishes to possess what was formerly his own. He seeks virtue and wealth, doing nothing reprehensible, possesses wisdom and vast learning, and besides, is far-sighted and of excellent character. For this son of Pandu, abstention from harm surpasses even virtue, and virtue surpasses the accumulation of wealth. His mind, O Bharata, is always inclined toward happiness and joy, as well as toward actions that are virtuous and conducive to attaining the highest goals of life."'
