It is indeed by good fortune that a man is born into a good lineage, or becomes strong, or renowned, or learned in various branches of knowledge, or enjoys the comforts of life, or becomes able to master his senses or to discern virtue from vice, which are always bound together. What man, under the guidance of the best counselors, endowed with intelligence, able to discern virtue from vice in times of calamity, not devoid of religious observance and retaining the use of all his faculties, would commit cruel deeds? These counselors, ever devoted to your affairs, wait here together. Even so, their firm resolve remains (namely, that the Pandavas will not have their share restored). Thus, the destruction of the Kurus will surely be brought about by the force of circumstance. If, provoked by insults, Yudhishthira should wish suffering upon you, the Kurus will be destroyed prematurely, while, having passed all his sins on to you, the blame for this deed will be yours in this world. Indeed, what else is there but the will of the Gods, since Arjuna, the son of Pritha, upon leaving this world, ascended to the highest heavens and was greatly honored there.

The fragment 5.32.16-20 develops the central theme of Udyoga-parva: the effort for peace is already underway against the backdrop of an inevitable war. Key themes: dharma. Dharma is revealed here through speech, the choice of an embassy, faithfulness to promises, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
