译文

The man who eats sparingly gains these six things — health, long life and ease of body; his offspring are healthy, and no one reproaches him for gluttony. One should not give shelter in one's house to the man who always acts wrongly, who eats too much, who is hated by all, who is exceedingly given to lying, who is cruel, who knows nothing of the proprieties of time and place, and who dresses unbecomingly. However afflicted a man may be, he should never beg alms of a miser, of one who speaks ill of others, of one unacquainted with the shastras, of a forest-dweller, of one who is crafty, of one who deems no one worthy of respect, of one who is cruel, of one who habitually quarrels with others, or of one who is ungrateful. A man should never wait upon these six lowest of men, namely: one who is an enemy, one who is always at fault, one devoted to falsehood, one lacking devotion to the gods, one destitute of affection, and one who always thinks himself capable of doing everything. A man's undertakings depend for their success on the means employed; and the means, in turn, depend on the nature of the ends they are meant to serve.
