Blessed are you; the gaining of good counselors is said to be the second kind of strength. The wise have said that the acquisition of wealth is the third kind of strength. The strength of birth, O king, which a man naturally inherits from his fathers and grandfathers, is reckoned the fourth kind of strength. But that, O Bharata, by which all these are attained, and which is the greatest of all kinds of strength, is called the strength of intellect. Having provoked the hostility of a man capable of doing great harm to his neighbor, one should not take comfort in the thought that one lives far away from him. Who that is wise can place his trust in women, in kings, in serpents, in his own master, in enemies, in pleasures, or in the span of life? There are no physicians and no medicines for one who has been struck by the arrow of wisdom. In the case of such a man, neither sacrificial mantras, nor auspicious rites, nor spells of the Atharva Veda, nor well-prepared antidotes to poison have any efficacy. Serpents, fire, lions and men of noble family — none of these, O Bharata, should ever be held in contempt by a man; all of them possess great power.

This passage (5.37.46-50) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolding already against the backdrop of an unavoidable war. Key theme: dharma. Dharma reveals itself here through speech, the choice of an embassy, fidelity to one's promises, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
