One should never trust one who is not to be trusted, nor should one trust too much even one who is to be trusted, for the danger that arises from having trusted another cuts away the very roots. One should renounce envy, guard one's wives, render to others their due, and be pleasant in speech. Toward one's wives one should be sweet of speech and gentle in dealing with them, yet one should never become their slave. It is said that blessed and virtuous wives, worthy of honor and the very adornment of the house, are in truth the embodiment of the household's prosperity. Therefore they must be protected above all. The care of the inner apartments should be entrusted to the father; the kitchen, to one's mother; the cattle, to one whom one regards as one's own self; but the tilling of the land one should oversee oneself. Guests of the merchant class should be looked after through one's servants, and guests of the brahmin class through one's sons.

The passage 5.38.11-15 develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolds against the background of an already-approaching war. Here dharma reveals itself through speech, the choice of envoys, faithfulness to one's word, and the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
